As an American, light yellow looks the best. White would be too much like the American flag, and it might make him look too much patriotic. Light yellow is a fun color for him. ^_^

I believe the more correct term for an equine's body hair would be coat color. All in all, I think you choose the right colors. And actually, I thought this was a ponified version of Steve at first. c: He looks really cute~ Your pony art always looks so cute!
The yellow-ish fur is pretty good. White fur would probably make it look too much like Canada.
